I’m reading a very short poetry book by indie local author right now. The book title is Windy Field, I just started so I don’t have much to say yet but I love the poems so far! I still have to catch up with my reviews, there are two more books I need to review. Hopefully I will get back to reading bigger book this weekend!

just finished

Alternating between YA and MG book seems to improve my reading productivity! I often feel kinda tired after reading YA fantasy book and MG book restore the fun! I finished Descendants of War: Magic’s Demise and it was an okay read for me, review will be coming up soon. And after that I read A Place Called Perfect and I loved it, it’s probably has the most unique world and plot!! I think I’ll read the sequel soon after I finished what I’m reading right now and maybe I’ll write mini review for both the first and second book!

next read

I’m gonna read The Trouble with Perfect because I’m in love with the world and the character! And you know how I recently obsessed with Taylor Jenkins Reid’s writing style ever since I read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, so I decided to read One True Loves, I heard nothing but great things about this book!

Top 5 Tuesday: Books I Despise but You Probably Loved (Please Don’t Kill Me!)

Top 5 Tuesday is weekly meme hosted by Shanah and this week’s topic is Books That Didn’t Lived Up to the Hype,

It’s time for a controversial post and I hope you guys didn’t hate me for this, because I got some books that I didn’t like which you guys probably loved so much! But hey, what’s a community without a little bit of difference right?

So here’s the list of top 5 books that didn’t work for me but are adore by so many people!

Caraval

I saw so many of you guys really liked this book and it was hyped a couple of years ago. I finally read it a few months ago and it didn’t work for me, I didn’t hate this book, it’s an okay read but I can’t see why this book was such overhyped! I’ve write a review and you can read it here if you’d like!

The Raven Cycle

The fandom of The Raven Cycle is so huge, there are a lot of people in love with the book, the characters, and the writing. But sadly this book is not for me, the world is confusing, and the pace is so slow, the characters are great though but as you probably know that I’m more of a plot person than the characters so… Here‘s my review if you’d like to read it!

Scythe

I really love the basic idea of the future world without death and there has to be Scythe to control the population, but that’s the only thing that I like about this book. The pace is dragging, the characters are forgettable, and I didn’t really like the plot. Here‘s my review!

Mirage

This book is a weird mix between fantasy and sci-fi and it just didn’t work well for me. There are not much happening in this book, it feels flat to me, the world is super weird, but the characters are pretty great. It’s an okay read for me, read my full review here.

Six of Crows

I read this book a long time ago before I even blog so I haven’t write a review yet. I jumped into this book without reading The Grisha trilogy first and I think it was a big mistake, because I was so confused with the world and some of the strange terms in this book. I know so many people love the characters and I can see why, but I just don’t feel the connection to any of them. I do want to re-read this (after I read The Grisha Trilogy first) and I guess we’ll see if I would change my mind.

The publisher asked me to review Descendants of War: Magic’s Demise and after reading the synopsis and some reviews on Goodreads I agree to read and review it.

Here’s the synopis of the book:

Thousands of years ago, the Ancients bestowed the Nine Energies of Magic to certain humans known as Descendants. When Aurora, briefly in possession of all Nine Energies, defeated King Zagan during the Battle of Venom, peace returned to the war-torn queendom of Thurnadan. However, a new adversary has emerged: The Jinx. Far more threatening than Zagan and his army, The Jinx is a disease with a one hundred percent mortality rate. The race to find a cure is on; it is only a matter of time before the disease mutates and becomes capable of killing every living thing in its path.
Terror spreads. The Jinx seems to be unstoppable, especially when fate rests in the hands of the disheartened. A disturbing Seer’s vision and long-neglected maps are the only guidance the people of Thurnadan have in their frantic search for a cure. Turning to lore of the Ancients for answers, a dark Prophecy threatening the end of mankind’s reign is discovered, but a sliver of hope is also found within it’s riddle of verses.
Do the Ancients still live? Will the disease mutates and grow more powerful? And how much time does the queendom have before all are certain to perish?

I finished The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and The Gilded King this week. I absolutely loved Evelyn Hugo and I regret not reading it sooner. I have mixed feeling about The Gilded King, the worldbuilding is confusing and I can’t say I love the story but there’s a certain mystery that I don’t want to miss.

I’ve drafted my review of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and scheduled it to post later this week. I still need to work on the review of The Gilded King though.

I have absolutely no idea about what I’m going to read next, I guess it’s time for me to shake that TBR jar and blindly pick one.

I’ve been hearing glowing reviews about The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, so even though the genre is not really my taste but I’m willing to set aside my ego and see for myself what does people love about this book. I’m currently on page 170-ish, I have mixed feeling about the story, it kinda disturb me BUT I LOOVE the writing style!

I finished City of Ghost and Nightbooks in one day! Wow, who am I? They’re actually pretty easy to get into, and both books are full of mysteries and creepy stuff, they’re really a page turner for me. However, I’m suck at writing reviews so I don’t know if I’m gonna review them or not.

Honestly, I don’t even know what I’m gonna read next. I’m a mood reader so I guess we’ll see, but I think it’s gonna be one of these books.

I just started this MG fantasy book called Foreverfter: An Odd Adventure that I got from NetGalley, I want to slay all my NG TBR before reading any physical books and before requesting any books again.

just finished

I started off slow, I’ve only read three books this month. I was surprise at how much I love Song for a Lost Kingdom, because I don’t normally read historical fantasy. After I finished it I want to read more historical fantasy and I think My Lady Jane would be perfect, and it was! This book deserve all the hype, and I really need to read My Plain Jane soon. Unfortunately I didn’t like Begone the Raggedy Witches, it’s unusual for me because I always find every MG books are enjoyable, but not this one, it’s boring and I think the writing is over the top.

next read

I’ll read The Weeping Bok of Blinney Lane as part of the blog tour organized by Digital Reads Blog Tour , and I hope I could read Apple Pie Promises next, it’s the last book on my NetGalley shelf, wohoo!

Top 5 Tuesday: My Fictional Squad Shenanigans

Top 5 Tuesday is weekly meme hosted by Shanah and this week’s topic is Characters I’d Want to be My Bestfriend

Lemon Fresh

(Lifelike by Jay Kristoff)

When I first heard about this week’s prompt, the first character that pop to my mind is Lemon Fresh. She has the most unique name and personality, she’s so funny and brave. If there’s an award for the most loyal friend she absolutely gonna win it!

Hermione Granger

(Harry Potter by J.K Rowling)

giphy

We all need one brainiac in our squad and I want to have this girl in mine! She is smart, butt kicking, and she has a pure kind heart!

Daisy Winters

(Royals by Rachel Hawkins)

Daisy is a really honest person, she often runs into trouble because of her unfiltered mouth. She has bad tempered and say whatever that comes to her mind no matter how insulting. But despite all that, she’s a really fun person to be with.

Iko

(The Lunar Chronicle by Marissa Meyer)

Who doesn’t want this cute and fun android in their team? She always gives the best advice and could easily live up the party!

Sue Heck

(The Middle)

giphy (29)

I really admire this girl energy and positivity, two things that I don’t have! She also doesn’t give a damn to what people think about her, she is the kindest person!

Top Ten Tuesday: Drama/Comedy TV Shows that Deserves More Attention

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together

I’m so excited for today’s prompt because I really need to see what everyone has been watching and I also want to share my favorite Drama/Comedy series that I have been watching for years!

Modern Family

I’ve been binge-watching this series for the last three months, I have no idea why I didn’t watch this series sooner!

giphy

Modern family is about three diverse families. Jay Pritchett is remarried to a much younger latina, Gloria and has a step son. Jay has two children from her previous marriage, Claire who married to Phil Dunphy and has 3 children, and Mitchell who married with Cameron Tucker and adopt an asian baby!

This family is disastrous most of the time but also sweet and supporting! I love how every families have their own issues but managed to involve the big family into their problems. This show is hillarious!

The Goldbergs

The Goldbergs is one of my favorite family show. Set in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania, the story follows little Adam, the youngest of three siblings who’s also a geek and obsessed with movie making. The movie is entirely from Adam’s POV as he sees life in the 80’s through his lazy eyes and camera lens.

He always filmed his activities in the house with his video tape, mostly the shouting at each other part, which I found very hilarious because the scenes are always relatable, it’s the very problems we may have faced in our house.

I actually have write a blog post abut this series, you can read it here if you want!

The Middle

Oh God I LOVE THIS SERIES SO MUCH, and I’m in literal tears when they end this series last year after a long nine season!

giphy (23)

It’s about a lower middle class family lives in Indiana and try to get a hold of their live by working multiple jobs while raising three children. I love every characters they are so unique. this show is the most relatable show about family I’ve ever seen in a while!

Black-ish

Black-ish is about an upper middle class African-American family. The story is so refreshing, it tackle a lot of issues in the community, mainly racism.

Fresh Off the Boat

Another diverse TV show you can watch. The story follows a family of Taiwanese from the point of view of Eddie Huang, the middle child. His father is living the dream by opening a steak restaurant, his mother struggles with cultural clash, his younger brothers fit in perfectly while Eddie struggles to find a seat in cafetaria because of his lunch his mother made.

giphy (25)

This show give us an understanding of the struggle to be an immigrant, it’s so hillarious!

Top Ten Tuesday: Welcome Back to (Magic and All Kind of Superpower) School

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together

This week’s prompt is anything related to school so I choose to feature my favorite books with magic school and school for kid with extraordinary abilities setting! And ummm of course they’re mostly middle-grade books, I hope you’re not tired of me recommending you MG books 😂

Harry Potter

Why of course I have to include this book on the list! It would be a sin if I don’t, I mean it’s kinda like the pioneer of magic school!

Hogwarts is where it all started for me, I’m pretty sure it’s the same for you too!

Percy Jackson and the Olympian

It’s not exactly a school, it’s more like a camp, but it’s home to Demigods so you can count this one in!

Camp Half Blood is my second favorite place after Hogwarts, there are so many fun activities and so many friendly people!

Keeper of the Lost Cities

There’s this prestigious school for Elves called Foxfire in this book. Grades in Foxfire are called Levels. There are eight levels altogether, but only the first six are available to all elves. The Elite Levels, Levels Seven and Eight, only allow elves with abilities to study and learn there.

Elves has different abilities, but some are not manifested at all. They got some cool abilites like telepath, empath, technopath, mesmer, vanisher, and so many other cool abilities!

Nevermoor

The Wundrous Society is not exactly school, it’s the most prestigious organisation in Nevermoor that allow only extraordinary talented kid.

The School for Good and Evil

It’s the school for good and evil. Where good kids are placed in the school for good and trained to be Prince or Princess while the bad kids are placed in the school for evil where they are trained to be evil Wizards or Witches! When they are graduated, they become the characters for an actual fairytale!

The Crowns of Croswald

The Hall of Ivy is divided into two programs, The Queens and The Scrivenists. Scrivenists are the discoverers who sketch and record all that they see and have photographic memory.  And The Queens are who the Scrivenerist get assigned to serve once they graduate from school.

I have to say that the school is very similar to Hogwarts though. It has potion study, transfiguraton, a dining hall with ghosts, and so many more resemblances to HP.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children

It’s a home for the peculiars! They each have unique abilities that nobody could ever think of! Some of the abilities are flying, see monsters, invisible, could wake the dead, has bees inside his body, and so many other peculiar abilities!

Miss Peregrine is a ymbryne and the headmistress of her children’s-home, she keep the home in time loop so they don’t age a second!

Legend of Greg

There is this secret society of dwarves underground where the dwarf kids hang out and learn to become a proper dwarf. Some of the dwarves abilities are incredible, they could turn to stone in a great danger (the training is painful though)!! They have amazing individual skills too, our main character could grow plants out of nowhere (it sounds lame but believe me it’s surprisingly useful in combat),

Renegades

Renegades remind me so much of Sky High. It’s an elite academy of superhuman who learn to be heroes and protector of the city.

The abilites are super cool, Sketcher is my favorite, he could pull everything he sketch to life! Nightmare could put people to sleep, Cyanide could produce toxins from his body, Red Assassin could make a weapon out of her own blood!

The Magicians

Okay, I run out of idea so I included this adult fantasy book on the list. It’s Hogwarts meet Narnia but it’s much much darker. I like the first book but never continue to read the rest of the series because I lost interest, plus it’s not really my cup of tea, so many adult and serious stuff going on and it makes me sick.

linechat

Have you read any of this books? Do you like them? What’s your favorite? Do you know other book with magic or superpower school setting? Let me know!
