Top 5 Tuesday: Books I Despise but You Probably Loved (Please Don’t Kill Me!)

Top 5 Tuesday is weekly meme hosted by Shanah and this week’s topic is Books That Didn’t Lived Up to the Hype,

It’s time for a controversial post and I hope you guys didn’t hate me for this, because I got some books that I didn’t like which you guys probably loved so much! But hey, what’s a community without a little bit of difference right?

So here’s the list of top 5 books that didn’t work for me but are adore by so many people!

Caraval

I saw so many of you guys really liked this book and it was hyped a couple of years ago. I finally read it a few months ago and it didn’t work for me, I didn’t hate this book, it’s an okay read but I can’t see why this book was such overhyped! I’ve write a review and you can read it here if you’d like!

The Raven Cycle

The fandom of The Raven Cycle is so huge, there are a lot of people in love with the book, the characters, and the writing. But sadly this book is not for me, the world is confusing, and the pace is so slow, the characters are great though but as you probably know that I’m more of a plot person than the characters so… Here‘s my review if you’d like to read it!

Scythe

I really love the basic idea of the future world without death and there has to be Scythe to control the population, but that’s the only thing that I like about this book. The pace is dragging, the characters are forgettable, and I didn’t really like the plot. Here‘s my review!

Mirage

This book is a weird mix between fantasy and sci-fi and it just didn’t work well for me. There are not much happening in this book, it feels flat to me, the world is super weird, but the characters are pretty great. It’s an okay read for me, read my full review here.

Six of Crows

I read this book a long time ago before I even blog so I haven’t write a review yet. I jumped into this book without reading The Grisha trilogy first and I think it was a big mistake, because I was so confused with the world and some of the strange terms in this book. I know so many people love the characters and I can see why, but I just don’t feel the connection to any of them. I do want to re-read this (after I read The Grisha Trilogy first) and I guess we’ll see if I would change my mind.

  1. Caraval… oh, Caraval. When it first came out, I fell in love. Then a year later, I tried to reread some parts and it was just so…clunky and awkward. There was even a line that said, “The spray smelled of daisies and urine.” I think my taste have changed since reading Caraval, so I might pass on the sequel.

I agree with you on Six of Crows!! I read Shadow and Bone beforehand and it was still hard for me to get into it. The action didn’t pick up until the very end. I’m thinking of doing a reread, too. The characters are awesome but I couldn’t get attached.

    1. It’s funny how we evolve as a reader right?! I think I might pass on the sequel too.

I still need to get my hands on the trilogy, I might do a re read soon after I finished them.

    1. Yes finally someone who agree with me on TRC! I haven’t read TCP yet but I heard quite mixed reviews and now I’m too nervous to read it. OH NO, I loooooved CoBB 😂

  2. I also couldn’t get into Mirage. I made it a few chapters in, but the first few chapters just felt like a massive info-dump and weren’t engaging at all so I lost interest.

    1. Oh God and here I thought I was the only odd one for not liking Mirage. I power through the end though and it’s not getting better 😂

      1. Yeah, I haven’t heard a single person not like that book. I’m kind of glad it doesn’t get better because at least I feel like I’m not missing out 😂

    1. Ahh glad we’re on the same page! I’ve seen so many people loved Caraval though, maybe it’s a hit or miss. I might give SoC a second chance too after I read Grisha trilogy!

    1. I might give SoC a second chance though, but I will have to read the Grisha trilogy first! Glad we agree on The Raven Cycle, I hope you like Mirage more than I did. Happy reading babe 💕

    1. Thank you so much for reading it Carly! Yeah that book is very confusing, but I’m sure someone who are preferred character over plot would enjoy the book more!

    1. Thank you! Glad I’m not the only one about Caraval. The others just didn’t impressed me but I think they’re just not for everyone.

Sayang sekali Olin ga cocok.
It is okay, I don’t hate you. Selera baca tiap orang beda soalnya 😀

    1. Hahaha sama Hanaa pusing banget kan baca yang dua itu, worldbuildingnya sulit dimengerti dan pace nya lambat. Caraval emang mudah dimengerti sih tapi aku kurang suka jalan ceritanya 😂

  4. Ah! My heart is physically aching. Haha! I was pretty underwhelmed by Caraval as well, but loved all the others. If you ever decide to continue with the Caraval series though, the sequel is wonderful! 20 times better than the first novel in my opinion! 🙂
