Calendar Girls: Second Best Novel Set in School (Because I Can’t Always Choose Harry Potter)

I almost missed this meme because I completely forgot the due date of this prompt, but worry not, I have made up my mind and ready to introduce to you guys the book of my choice!

The Calendar Girls is a monthly blog event that was created by Melanie at MNBernard Books, and Flavia at Flavia the Bibliophile, and is now hosted by Adrienne at Darque Dreamer Reads, and Katie at Never Not Reading. It was inspired by the 1961 classic song by Neil Sedaka and created to ignite fun bookish discussions among readers and bloggers.

Each month we will vote between two themes, and when the theme is decided we have to choose one book around the theme to post and discuss in our blog. The other fun part is there will be a group twitter chat to discuss about the books we picked! If you’re interested to participate you could visit Adrienne’s or Katie’s blog to learn more about the meme!

This month’s theme is Best Novel Set in School and believe me I have to resist the temptation to chose Harry Potter countless times! Of course Harry Potter is the best novel set in school, there’s no doubt about it, but I think it’s unfair to choose it because everyone have already know that! So yeah, I’ll go with my second best, which is….

I know I just discovered this series last month but the addiction is real people! The world is so similar with Harry Potter, I can see some resemblances from the characters, place, and a little bit from the plot too, and not to mention the “Chosen One” trope. This series is either hit or miss, some might be pissed to see so many similarities to HP but for me, this series hit me hard!

The story is not mostly set in the magic school, because it’s not a boarding school, unlike Hogwarts. Foxfire is the most prestigious school for Elves, the grades are called levels and there are eight levels in Foxfire. Every elves has different abilities, they will have to take Ability Detecting class and if they don’t develop an ability by level 4 they have to leave Foxfire as Talentless. Level 7 and 8 are the Elite levels, they only allowed prodigies with “special” ability to learn there.

There are so many interesting classes in Foxfire like Alchemy, Elementalism, Agriculture, Metaphysic, Multispeciesial Study and many more.

The set is not too focused in the school though, it has a lot more adventures outside the school. I really admire the wide and amazing magic world in this series, whenever I thought I already now every places in this world, there are always a new awesome place I have yet to discover!

  1. So I haven’t read it and yes I am interested *happy? LOL*. This is a really interesting series and it reminds me of HP of course but with a unique “feel”. I love it and this month it seems that everyone chose different books so far!!!!

  2. Omg I can’t believe I haven’t heard of this series before! It sounds like so much fun!! I’ve only read the first book of Harry Potter (I know I’m horrible) so I feel like the similarities wouldn’t bother me. Definitely adding this to my never ending tbr haha😄

    1. Whay haven’t you read the entire HP series? I’m so heartbroken to hear this! But if you haven’t read HP then you’ll be surprised of how much you like Keeper of the Lost Cities!!

      1. It is a thing I created, where I try to read more Middle Grade and talk about them in the month of March. As far as I know, I’m the only one who participates, but I’ve done it the last two years, and I’d love to have others join me.

      1. If you haven’t read HP then you should have any problems with this series, you’ll probably like it more than I do!!

  4. Haha yes, Harry Potter is undoubtedly the best magical school series (and the best series ever), but I’m so glad you ended up going with this one! I haven’t had a chance to pick it up yet, but your endorsement as a second best makes me uber excited to check it out. I love the covers, and it does sound rather adventurous! I’ll be sure to put it on my TBR, so thanks for the rec! 😀

  5. OMGOMGOMG gaaaah I’ve been reading the KOTLC series since it first came out, and I am so so happy that you decided to feature it! (Especially in the first blog post I read of yours — I am *definitely* going to check out your other posts 😉). I agree, Shannon Messenger’s books definitely give off a very Harry Potter vibe to it, but I love the female main character and the RELATIONSHIPS. Oh my goodness, the relationships are SO well-developed in this series! From Sophie and Bianca’s rough friendship to all the shipping (I’m a lonesome Dex-Sophie fan over here 😋) and the family dynamics, this series is awesome. Better than the Harry Potter series, even, in some aspects.

I adored this post of yours, Carolina! Hopefully we can talk more about the KOTLC series in the future! 😊

    1. Hello Zoie!! I can’t believe why I didn’t read this series sooner!!! I can see how much you love this series, and I’m glad I can be a part of this amazing fandom too now!!! OH MY GOD, I’m silently rooting for Dex-Sophie too, although Keefe is kind of cute!! I need to get my hads on the third book immediately!!

Please talk to me about KOTLC anytime!!!
