TV Talk: The Goldbergs

You won’t believe how sceptical I was before actually watch this series. I do judge something by it’s cover/poster, and when I first discovered this movie I was like “what is this old thing?” and “why is the poster so lame?” but then I was curious because of it’s good reviews and high rating, so I decided to give it a try. And, it turns out to be one of the best family/drama/comedy I’ve ever seen!

The Goldbergs is a sitcom aired on ABC, produced by Adam F. Goldberg based on his family and childhood back in 1980’s.

Set in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania, the story follows little Adam, the youngest of three siblings who’s also a geek and obsessed with movie making. The movie is entirely from Adam’s POV as he sees life in the 80’s through his lazy eyes and camera lens.

I need to introduced you to the cast before we jump in, so here they are:

Cast Role
Wendi McLendon-Covey Beverly Goldberg Mom
Jeff Garlin Murray Christian Goldberg Dad
George Segal Albert Solomon Pops (Beverly’s Father)
Hayley Orrantia Erica Dorothy Goldberg Oldest Child
Troy Gentile Barry Norman Golberg Middle Child
Sean Giambrone Adam Fredrick Goldberg Youngest Child

Our main character Adam is the youngest Goldbergs, he’s a certified geek and movie making addict. He always filmed his activities in the house with his video tape, mostly the shouting at each other part, which I found very hilarious because the scenes are always relatable, it’s the very problems we may have faced in our house. And he’s also obsessed with making his own movie and re-making Star Wars, Transformers, or Tron, and Pops will always be there to be the star of Adam’s movies no matter how silly they are. Watching Adam with his geek business is always a fun thing because I can relate to him so much, I think we all do.

This movie is based on the tape that the real Adam recorded back in the 80’s that he treasured his entire life. And at the end of the movie there’s always a short footage of the real recording of the real characters.

The Goldbergs are so far from perfect family, the house is so loud, everyone shouting to one another, fighting, cursing, but in the end they always find a way to make it up.

The root of all their problems are usually from the smothering queen Beverly Goldberg, she loves her children so much that she almost always interfere in her children’s lives, she snuggle, smooch, march to the headmaster office to defend and support her children, she believes in anything her children believe they can do, even if it’s a rapper, director, singer, musician, artist, athlete, anything, she never said no to her kids

And the kid with the most ambitions is Barry, his stage name is Big Tasty, even though he never performed anything in his life but he always fond of the idea of being a rapper, and also a karate master, a neurosurgeon, and many other things. The kid has trouble to contain her emotions, he always throwing tantrums and shouting till he popped her veins. I know you must have known someone who could relate to this character, for me it’s my younger brother!

Despite Barry’s behavior, the family somehow could manage to handle him in their own way, Bev will snuggle and smooch him until he get more annoyed, Adam will sacrifice himself to be her brother’s punch bag, and Murray, well he’s just being Murray…

Yap, Murray will shout even louder and call him moron and calm Barry! That’s how you parent kids in the ’80s! Murray is the most unmotivated person, he rarely show it but he got a load of loves for his family!

I can talk about Erica and Pops, but by now you probably can’t wait to watch this movie right? 😂

My point is, as a 90’s generation, this movie is treasure because I get to look back at wonderful things that could only be found back in the 80’s or early 90’s. Hairspray, parachute pants, corduroy, bob haircut, plus this series has a lot of reference about 80’s movies, band, songs, and anything 80’s literally.

Do you like drama/comedy/family show? What’s your favorite?

If not, what’s your fav TV series genre?
